Panda Farmacy, Sri Lanka’s pioneering farm-based learning and experience centre that combines environmental education, sustainable farming, animal welfare, and nature-based family experiences, has announced the reopening of its facilities following months of restoration after the devastating impact of Cyclone Ditwah, which caused severe flooding across parts of the country and significantly affected the farm’s operations, infrastructure, educational programmes, and animal habitats.
As floodwaters rose across the property, emergency measures were undertaken to safeguard the farm’s animals, many of which had to be relocated to higher ground and cared for under challenging conditions. Educational programmes and visitor experiences were temporarily suspended as the team focused on ensuring the safety of animals, staff, volunteers, and surrounding communities while assessing the extent of the damage.
Founded by Dr. Paul Christopher, Panda Farmacy was established with a vision of reconnecting people with nature through meaningful, hands-on experiences. Today, the farm serves as a destination for children, families, schools, corporates, NGOs, and community groups seeking experiential learning opportunities that foster environmental stewardship, responsible living, and a deeper appreciation for food systems and the natural world.
Commenting on the reopening, Dr. Paul Christopher said, “Cyclone Ditwah was one of the most difficult chapters in our journey. Watching floodwaters move through spaces we had spent years building was heartbreaking. Our immediate concern was the safety of our animals, our team, and the children and families who are at the heart of everything we do. There were long days and sleepless nights spent relocating animals, protecting what we could, and beginning the difficult process of recovery.
What carried us through was the support of our community. Every message, every visit, every volunteer, and every act of encouragement reminded us why Panda Farmacy matters. Today, as we reopen our doors, we do so with immense gratitude and a renewed commitment to creating a space where people can learn, connect, and experience the beauty of nature in meaningful ways.”
Notably, despite challenges, Panda Farmacy was recognised by the World School Summit for Immersive Education with the “Best Model Farm & Experiential Hub” award, acknowledging its innovative approach to experiential learning, environmental education, and nature-based engagement for children, families, and communities.
Visitors to Panda Farmacy can participate in guided farm tours, interactive animal encounters, sustainable farming demonstrations, nature-based learning activities, family experiences, corporate engagement programmes, and customised educational visits. The farm is also home to Sri Lanka’s first Farm School, an innovative initiative designed to help children develop practical life skills, environmental awareness, leadership qualities, and a stronger connection to nature through direct engagement with farming, animals, and sustainable living practices.
